To Eat or Not To Eat?

To Eat, or Not to Eat?

Personally, my dietary restrictions are pretty laid back. As an athlete, I believe that it is important to eat balanced meals throughout the day and not have too much sugary food that does not contain the necessary nutrients that my body requires. But, that doesn’t mean I always eat what I should. Sometimes, a bagel with cream cheese will have to hold me over until lunch.

This morning, the wonderful kitchen staff at Proctor Academy was doing an omelette bar! I really am a sucker eggs. In my omelette I asked for red and green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. There were options for sausage, ham and bacon, but I prefer not to eat pork due to possible inflammatory that it could cause. There was also an option for cheese, but I try to limit my dairy intake. I have read into a lot of dairy farms and how their livestock is treated; let’s just say I’m not a fan. I may be a hypocrite for saying that, because I give in so easily to a glass of chocolate milk or cream cheese on my bagel.

I can never seem to make it through my first four classes before lunch, so I usually count on my daily
10:00am snacks. Today, it was a package of apple slices and caramel for my sugar intake (not that I needed it-like, at all). I also made myself a peanut butter sandwich with organic grain bread and some nice organic peanut butter as well. When I have a choice, I prefer organic products. Sometimes, at school and at home, I don’t particularly have choice so I am grateful for what I have. The idea of organic products excited me, especially as someone who is an enthusiast regarding the decreasing of chemical production into our
environment, potentially going into
our food.

So, I know that the snacking is a habit that I have to break because I am never actually hungry while hot food is being served in the dining hall. This apple here was from the dining hall, so that counts right? Right? Anyway, the apple was delicious, as it usually is when I get to lunch realizing I am not hungry anymore...

My personal favorite meal of the day at the dining hall is dinner. This is primarily because I get to sit down with my friends and socialize without stressing about needing to get to class on time. I feel like this is definitely the most enjoyable time of day for me. Sometimes it’s hard to think about your food choices when you are in a rush, and how not choosing the organic rice may contribute to the rise of sea level may not be the first thing that crosses a person’s mind. This is another thing that I like about dinner; I actually have time to look through my food options given to me and choose ethically instead of impulsively
